Houdini is a 3D animation package developed by Side Effects software. Houdini is known for its specialized focus on procedural generation and has been used in many absolute blockbusters such as Frozen, Rio and Zootopia.
Houdini can model all standard geometries, do key framed animation and supports motion capture. It is fully featured with particle rendering, fluid dynamics, rigid body dynamics, curve- and cloth- simulation.
It supports various renderers both built-in and 3rd-party. There is extensive lighting options, compositing, volumetrics and a healthy community interest in developing plugins.
SYSTEM RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HOUDINI:
Houdini only asks that you throw as many CPU cores at it as you can manage. 16GB of RAM and a mid-range workstation GPU are usually fine for smooth live model interaction, but rendering is the real time sink and oodles of threads will help cure that ailment. A fast SSD as your main drive also will not hurt to help keep things moving. After all, in animation time really is money.
