CPU Recommendations

Choosing a CPU for Ansys can be quite tricky, because the number of cores that the software can use depends on a few different factors. First, there’s the license type. All Ansys packages support four logical CPU cores, which equates to a dual-core CPU with multithreading or a quad core without. Ansys also sees a GPU card as one CPU core.

However, the number of cores you need to get the most out of Ansys depends on what you need it to do, the number of cores that are optimal for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) will differ, and can differ even more depending on the nature of the specific simulations.

If you want to use more than the basic four core allotment, you need to purchase HPC packs licenses from Ansys to increase the number of cores the software will use. However, not every type of Ansys simulation benefits equally from increasing cores beyond a certain point.

RAM: Ansys Loves It

While the amount of CPU cores Ansys wants is highly variable, when it comes to memory this software likes a lot of it. In general, we’d recommend no less than 128GB of fast RAM, but if your project is of a larger size, even 512GB might be appropriate. Luckily, we have numerous workstations that can accommodate this much RAM with the option to add more down the road.


Storage Requirements: Faster Is Better

If you’re trying to fill large amounts of RAM to feed a big multi-core CPU, then you need secondary storage that can pump out that data at phenomenal rates. Your data, operating system and Ansys itself should all be on fast NVMe SSD storage, preferably PCIe Gen 4 or newer. We recommend no less than 512GB for the primary drive.


The Best GPU Options

While many professionals in different fields can get away with using consumer-grade GPUs such as the NVIDIA GeForce cards, that just won’t fly with Ansys where errors and precision issues are unacceptable. As such , we recommend workstation-grade GPUs with validated drivers, such as the Quadro A-series or the RTX 4000 Series.
