We are living in the era of multi-threaded professional software. If you work in video conversion, number-crunching research or other high-performance computing arenas then you can throw as many CPU cores as you want at the problem and experience performance gains.

CAD software is different. Although big-name applications such as AutoCAD have components that are fairly multithreaded, as a whole it’s better to go for the fastest single-threaded performance than to move beyond a quad- or even dual- core CPU. Until very recently we would have recommended a fast dual-core system for dedicated CAD workstations if customers are on a budget, with quad-cores being the norm.

Those days are over and the core-wars have kicked into high gear at every price level. Which is why we can now build a computer like the W161.

At the heart of this build you’ll find the latest Coffee lake architecture from Intel. The i7-10700K is a 8-core CPU. It’s minimum core speed is 3.8 Ghz, but if only a few threads are fully engaged it will turbo up to 5.1 Ghz on stock cooling. There is literally no downside for CAD professionals using this arrangement. It means that the W161 can blaze through CAD work and then also do double duty on many other professional applications.

Since we expect this machine to be used in single-threaded applications frequently, we’ve equipped it with water cooling to keep the noise and heat down to a minimum. We’ve also put 32GB of RAM in as standard, so all but the largest CAD projects should easily fit.
