AUTODESK REVIT Workstation PC
Choosing the Best Workstation for AutoDesk Revit
If construction’s your game, then AutoDesk Revit Is probably a name you’ve heard often. This amazing tool is an invaluable asset for architects, structural engineers, plumbers, electricians, and more.
Revit ensures the maxim “measure twice, cut once” is truer than ever, and getting it right in Revit can save you millions of dollars down the line. However, to really get your money’s worth from Revit, you need to give it the right workstation to thrive on, and that’s what we’re here to help you do.

The Best Revit CPUs
Like most CAD/CAM software packages, most of what Revit does during the normal workflow of design only uses one or two CPU cores. Which means that we want a CPU with fast single-core performance.
You don’t need a Xeon-class CPU for CAD/CAM work in most cases, so modern Intel i9 or i7 CPUs with high clock speeds are what we want here. It’s now normal for the single core (or maybe up to four cores) “boost” speeds to be between 5Ghz and 6Ghz, so preferably you’d want to aim for a CPU running at those speeds.
While Revit can make use of multiple cores, it doesn’t scale very well and only a few functions during normal workflow will really benefit. It’s only during CPU-based rendering that many cores will provide an advantage. Generally we recommend having a dedicated rendering workstation, so that designers don’t have to stop what they are doing to wait for renders, but if you want one workstation that does it all, typical CPUs with 6-8 performance cores and then a number of additional efficiency cores, will do a fine job of rendering, without sacrificing single-core performance.
That being said, Revit is moving towards GPU-based rendering, which means you may be better off investing in a faster GPU, and sticking with a mid-range CPU (e.g. the 14600K) with fast single-core performance if you’re planning on using those new rendering engines.
Which GPU Should I Get for Revit?
While there’s no real reason to get a Xeon or other workstation-class professional CPU for Revit, when it comes to GPUs things are a little different. AutoDesk only certifies a small number of professional GPUs, such as Quadro cards or the new A-Series from NVIDIA. That means, although consumer grade cards will work and will perform just as well in most cases, you can’t expect any support from AutoDesk if things go wrong.
If you’re not looking to use GPU rendering, then a mid range professional card will work just fine, and if you do want to, there are always powerhouses like the A6000. If you use a consumer grade card, you’ll have to do so at your own risk!
How Much RAM for Revit?
This is one of the easiest questions to answer. For Revit, we recommend the same 32GB of RAM minimum that we think any professional user should have in their computer, and even mainstream users these days.
Of course, the RAM requirements for Revit will be dictated by the project file size. So it’s a good idea to leave room to expand to 64GB, or even simply go with 64GB from the start. RAM is one of the least expensive components in a workstation, so there’s no harm in erring on the more generous size.
What Sorts of Drives Should I Use With Revit?
As with any modern computer system, we strongly recommend a fast NVME SSD as your primary drive to host the operating system and Revit. You can also store your active project files on this drive, but we suggest a large mechanical drive for archival storage and if your budget allows, a secondary SSD for active project files specifically.
SSDs have revolutionized computer performance, and they are essential to a good workflow experience and making the most of your other high-performance components.
